Saturn at Western Quadrature

saturn-west-quadrature   Thursay March 29th, the position of the planet Saturn with respect to the Earth and the Sun places this ringed planet at what is called western quadrature. Saturn is at a 90 degree angle from us as this graphic shows. Think third quarter Moon as that is a fair comparison of the relative positions. At this position Saturn leads the Sun across the sky from east to west as the Earth is rotating, meaning that Saturn rises before the Sun and also sets before the Sun.

Saturn currently is within the constellation of Sagittarius the Archer as this graphic shows. From the northern hemisphere, looking toward the southern horizon, you can find Saturn to the east, left, from the reddish star Antares. Between Saturn and Antares is Mars, about 2-3o from Saturn. To the right from Antares is the planet Jupiter.

Jupiter at Quadrature ——— Venus at Elongation

   Thursday January 12th the gas giant planet Jupiter reaches the point along its orbit around the Sun where Jupiter would be described as being at western quadrature. It is at a 90o angle relative to the Earth and the Sun.
   Also on this day the inner planet Venus reaches a point in its orbit known as eastern elongation. This puts Venus at somewhere around a 90o angle relative to the Earth and the Sun when viewed looking down from above the solar system but Venus is on the other side of the Sun from where Uranus is currently located.
   In terms of elongation Venus is 47.2o to the east of the Sun. In terms of viewing angle you are the point of a triangle with Venus at the left base corner and the Sun at the right base corner. The angle between the Sun and Venus is the elongation angle, and at 47.2o Venus sets around 3 hours after sunset as its seting motion or speed is (15o per hour based on Earth rotation rate.
   Where is Jupiter currently? Jupiter rises around midnight local time and is located high above the southern horizon at sunrise local time near the blue-white star Spica in Virgo the Harvest Maiden.
   And Venus? Can’t miss this planet as it is the brighest stellar object over the western horizon at sunset.

Mars at West Quadrature

orbital-positions   Sunday February 7th the position of the planet Mars, with respect to the Earth and the Sun, places this planet at what is called western quadrature. At that orbital position Mars, and actually any outer planet at their respective quadrature, is at a 90 degree angle from the Earth as this graphic shows, and the banner graphic at the top of the page shows. Think last quarter Moon as that is a fair comparison of the relative positions of Earth, Sun, and Mars. At this position Mars leads the Sun across the sky from east to west as the Earth is rotating, meaning that Mars rises before the Sun.
   Sunday morning finds Mars and the other visible planets spread across the morning skies from east to west.

Jupiter at West Quadrature

   Thursday the giant planet gas Jupiter reaches the point along its orbit around the Sun where Jupiter would be described as being at western quadrature. It is at a 90o angle relative to the Earth and the Sun.
   Where is Jupiter currently? Jupiter rises around midnight local time and is located near the stars of Leo the Lion. Look for Jupiter to be just up to the right from Regulus, and as this graphic shows has the last quarter Moon nearby on the 14th.

Uranus at West Quadrature – 2014

At that orbital position Uranus, and actually any outer planet, is at a 90 degree angle from the Earth as this graphic shows, and the banner graphic at the top of the page shows. Think third quarter Moon as that is a fair comparison of the relative positions of Earth, Sun, and Uranus. At this position Uranus leads the Sun across the sky from east to west as the Earth is rotating, meaning that Uranus rises before the Sun and also sets before the Sun.

Neptune at West Quadrature

Distant Mars is All Right

mars-ani   Today the outer terrestrial planet Mars reaches two points in its orbit around the Sun. Today Mars will be at aphelion, its greatest distance from the Sun this time around at 1.6661 AU (249,245,012 km – 154,873,670 miles). The orbit of Mars is more elliptical than the Earth’s nearly circular shaped orbit and so it has a much wider range of aphelion and perihelion distances. Mars has an orbital eccentricity of 0.0935 compared with Earth’s 0.0167, and the length of a year on Mars is equal to 687 Earth days (1.88 Earth years).

   Today Mars will also reach one of an outer planets four orbital positions based on its orbital position relative to the positions of the Earth and the Sun. This is sort of one of those side positions when Mars is 90o or at a right angle from the Earth and the Sun as the last few frames of the animated graphic show. Today Mars is at west quadrature which puts it in the morning sky rising before the Sun rises. In fact today the Mars, Earth, Sun orbital positions are the same as for our Moon at its 3rd quarter phase.
