ISS this Morning

   This morning was one of the first clear skies in a long time, or at least since the last time I got up at 4:30 am on a Saturday morning. The circumpolar picture is made up of 234 stacked pictures. Cassiopeia is to the upper left. North star should be obvious!
The sequence when the ISS passed the ‘Twins’ used 14 pictures.

2017 June Solstice

21june-ecliptic   Northern hemisphere spring comes to an end and its summer begins on Wednesday day June 21st at 4:24 UT (11:24 pm CDT Tuesday June 20th) when the Sun ‘reaches’ the celestial coordinates of 23.5o north declination and 6 hours right ascension. With respect to the Earth’s surface the Sun is described as over the Tropic of Cancer, 23.5o, north latitude of the Earth’s equator. At this same time the Sun is just entering the boundaries of the astrological constellation Cancer the Crab. Interestingly about 11 hours later, June 21st at 15 UT (10 am CDT) the Sun will actually be entering the region of the Gemini Twins as it crosses the boundary between Gemini and Taurus.
Just had to include this!!
   According to the pseudoscience of astrology the Sun, at this date, would be entering the astrological sign of Cancer the Crab.

   We know that it is the Earth’s orbital motion around the Sun that causes the sun’s apparent eastward motion among the stars in the background. This is how the Sun ‘reaches’ a celestial coordinate, how it ‘crosses’ the boundaries between constellations, or how it is ‘in’ a constellation.

   With respect to the southern hemisphere this is the end of their summer and start of their fall season. So thinking globally my preference has been to use the name of the month to designate the season change. Hence the use of the term June Solstice rather than summer solstice.

3 Mornings With the ISS

   A favorite pastime of mine is to watch the International Space Station orbit over my part of the world and when possible capture the flyover on film.
   This picture is from Wednesday September 21st and is a time lapse consisting of about 80 separate pictures stacked together and processed as one picture.
    The dashed line is the reflected light from the ISS and each dash represents 2.5 seconds of travel. The camera was more or less centered on Polaris, above the chimney, so as the Earth rotated stars around Polaris moved and the curved lines show the apparent circumpolar path they follow.
   Thursday morning as I was walking my dog prior to leaving for work I spotted the ISS and whipped out my cellphone and captured some of its flight as a short video. The shaky motion comes from holding onto a 65 lb. dog on a leash with one hand and the cellphone in my other hand.

   This morning I set up for a time lapse series as I did on Wednesday. With large trees as my southern horizon this flyover past the constellation of Orion and the bright star Sirius was sort of a challenge. This is a series of 10 pictures stacked to show as one picture.

At this same time the Sun is still within the boundaries of the constellation Taurus the Bull – but just barely. Interestingly about 8 hours later, June 21st at 8 UT (3 am CDT) the Sun ‘will move’ into the region of Gemini as it crosses the boundary between Gemini and Taurus.
   According to the pseudoscience of astrology the Sun, at this date, would be entering the astrological sign of Cancer the Crab.

From Feet to Heads


   Over the last several days the Moon in its waxing phases has moved eastward from near the feet of the Gemini Twins to near the heads (sort of) of the Twins. By Wednesday May 11th the 5-day old Moon is about 14o from Pollux, the twin on the left as we view them.

Sun Enters Gemini

click on graphic to see it full size   Monday June 22nd at 2 UT, (Sunday June 21st – 8 pm CDT) the Sun in its apparent eastward motion along the ecliptic, moves out of the constellation Taurus the Bull and into the constellation of The Gemini Twins. This is the true or actual position of the Sun as opposed to the pseudoscience of astrology which usually has the astrological Sun one constellation ahead or east from the Astronomical Sun’s position.
