In 2003 Sue and I visited Ecuador and Stayed with Graciela’s family in Quito and also with Maritza’s family in Guaranda. In Quito we went to the older part of the city, markets, and parks. A geographical sort of highlight was going to a museum located on the equator. We hiked to the refugio (about 16,000 feet) on Cotopaxi, and did the obligatory shopping trip to Otavalo. We had an opportunity to visit with the boy we were sponsoring through Children International and saw a very different side of life in Quito.
With Maritza’s parents we drove from Quito (down hill mostly) to the coast to the cities of Salinas and Guayaquil, and then north along the coast on the Ruta del Sol to the city of Manta where we stayed for a few days. Had great breakfasts of Ceviche and popcorn with cafe de leche on the side.
