On Monday January 12th our Moon will be crossing the plane of the ecliptic moving north. This is known as the ascending node, one of two intersections the Moon’s orbital path (dark green line) has with the ecliptic.
Look for the 24-day old last quarter Moon to be near the star Spica in Virgo and both to be over the southeastern horizon at sunrise local time.
